Why Does My Plastisol Bubble and Foam During Cooking? Lab Diagnosis and the Limits of Cheap Compounds

In the world of DIY softbaits, too many far-fetched theories are repeated by people who reshape the laws of chemistry to suit their imagination. The reality is much simpler: if your plastisol fills with micro-bubbles or creates a dense foam that ruins the lure, there is always a precise reason.

Learning to recognize the visual appearance of bubbles allows you to immediately understand what is happening inside the jug, avoiding wasting liters of material. In our laboratory, we have isolated three very distinct situations.

The Visual Diagnosis: The 3 Types of Bubbles

1. Chemical Incompatibility Bubbles (Large and Pronounced)

These occur when the components of the compound do not bond well with each other. This often happens on the market when an industrial manufacturer replaces a raw material with another deemed "equivalent," but which has a different chemical base.

  • Appearance: They are large, obvious, and quite dense.

  • What to do: Being voluminous, they manage to rise to the top on their own. If you notice them at the beginning of cooking, stop, do not overheat, hold the jug still, and let the gases evaporate before pouring.

2. Moisture and Time Bubbles (Dense and Opaque)

If plastisol sits on the shelf for months or is exposed to light and air, it begins to age and attracts surrounding moisture.

  • Appearance: These are microscopic, extremely dense, and relentless bubbles. The plastisol loses its transparency and takes on a dull, frosted look, as if there were a thick fog inside the rubber.

3. Lack of Vacuum Bubbles (The White Foam)

These are the absolute worst. They arise when the compound was not subjected to a professional vacuum process at the origin, trapping all the air related to industrial mixing.

  • Appearance: During cooking, the plastisol does not become transparent, but turns into a white block, a truly impenetrable foam. In this case, you can wait as long as you want: the micro-bubbles will remain locked inside the rubber.

The Great Degasser Myth: Watch Out for Quality

The solution of choice we use in the Tycoon Technical Lab to eliminate air and moisture before cooking is passing it through the cold vacuum degasser. But beware: the vacuum is not a magic potion that heals anything.

The degasser works miracles and returns a product as clear as water only if the starting compound is structurally sound and of excellent quality.

If you are using a cheap, low-quality plastisol of dubious origin or one that is too old, the cold vacuum will extract the initial air, but as soon as the jug hits $150^\circ\text{C}$ in the microwave, the internal chemistry will collapse anyway, generating new gases from thermal degradation. You can recover an old compound up to 80% only if its base stability is not compromised; otherwise, you are just degassing a chemically dead product.
